WHAT ARE KIMBERLEY CRUISES?

Explore a PONANT Kimberley Cruise

PONANT KIMBERLEY CRUISES

Expedition Cruises are designed for travellers who want to go beyond the familiar and experience destinations that few people ever visit. Rather than following conventional cruise routes, expedition ships venture into remote wilderness regions where nature, wildlife and authentic cultural encounters take centre stage.

Purpose-built for exploration, these vessels are equipped with advanced navigation systems, Zodiac landing craft and experienced expedition teams who provide expert interpretation throughout the journey. Daily activities might include cruising past towering glaciers, landing on remote beaches, observing wildlife in its natural habitat or learning from scientists, historians and naturalists.

Unlike traditional cruises, expedition itineraries are often flexible, allowing the Captain and Expedition Leader to adapt plans to weather conditions, wildlife sightings and unique opportunities. This dynamic approach ensures that every voyage is as rewarding and memorable as possible.

For travellers seeking discovery rather than routine, expedition cruising offers one of the world's most enriching travel experiences.

BlueSun Insight

Many Australians assume the Kimberley is simply another scenic coastline.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Kimberley is one of the world's last great wilderness regions, where powerful tides, dramatic sandstone escarpments, ancient Aboriginal rock art and extraordinary wildlife combine to create an experience unlike anywhere else on Earth. Much of the coastline remains inaccessible by road, making a small ship cruise the most rewarding way to explore it.

At BlueSun Travel, we've spent decades helping travellers choose the right Kimberley cruise. We've learned that the ship, itinerary and timing of your voyage can dramatically influence your experience, especially when it comes to tides, waterfalls and wildlife.

For many guests, a Kimberley cruise isn't simply the highlight of their Australian travelsβ€”it's one of the greatest journeys of their lifetime.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs - PONANT Expedition Cruises

A Kimberley Cruise is an adventure cruise off the Northwest coast of Australia and it is very remote. As such, we know people have heaps of questions that we are fully able to answer. However, here are a few of the top ones.

Have a read of some of these basic FAQs but feel free to reach out and call us any time: 1300 799 758.Β

The Kimberley cruise season generally runs from April to September, with each month offering different highlights, including waterfalls, wildlife and favourable weather conditions. The waterfalls are best closer to the rainy season and up until June.Β

Most luxury Kimberley cruises range from 10 to 13 nights, depending on the itinerary and whether the voyage travels between Broome and Darwin or operates a return itinerary.

Yes. Saltwater crocodiles are commonly seen along rivers and estuaries, particularly during Zodiac excursions led by experienced expedition guides.

Most guests with moderate mobility can comfortably participate. Shore landings and Zodiac excursions require stepping into and out of inflatable boats, with crew available to assist.

Depending on the season, you may encounter saltwater crocodiles, humpback whales, dolphins, turtles, sea eagles, ospreys and a wide variety of native birdlife.

PONANT combines genuine expedition expertise with luxury accommodation, exceptional cuisine and immersive shore excursions, making it one of the finest ways to experience the Kimberley.

There are limited places where passengers will be able to swim on a Kimberley Cruise, because the waters are teeming with both crocodiles and sharks. Of course, the ships do have a swimming pool on board.
