Longyearbyen, the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, is located on the main island of Svalbard and is considered the northernmost territorial capital in the world. With winter temperatures plunging below −40°C, this former mining town is surrounded by truly spectacular Arctic landscapes. Towering glaciers, dramatic mountains stretching as far as the eye can see, and vast areas of untouched wilderness create an extraordinary sense of exploring one of the world’s last great frontiers.
Heraklion, the capital of Crete, is the island’s most populous city. The hustle and bustle of this seaport is an integral part of its charm. It is built on a hillside overlooking the port and is encircled by impressive Venetian walls. From the top of these, you will be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the city. The old town is teeming with small shops, squares, cafés and vibrant architectural evidence of the city’s long history. The Palace of Knossos illustrates the wealth and power of its legendary sovereign, King Minos. The archaeological museum houses one of the largest collections of Minoan artefacts and is worth a visit.
With its particularly agreeable climate, the island of Rhodes invites you to walk its pathways and discover its immaculate villages and sumptuous medieval city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. At the centre of the island the mountains are covered in forest and on the western slopes we find vineyards and crops. Rhodes also owes much of its charm and its character to the Knights of St John who reigned over the island from 1310 to 1522 and built impressive defensive walls punctuated with majestic gateways. Do not miss this delightful island with its peaceful beaches and its large walkways, perpetuating the myth of the famous Colossus, the legendary statue that is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Your captain will sail right up to the limit of the ice, to the edge of the ice floe. Weather conditions and state of the ice allowing, you will be able to go out in a zodiac dinghy for a unique experience in the middle of these floating slabs of ice. In addition to this grandiose journey through the middle of these floes with their cut and blue-tinged edges, sometimes over 2 metres thick, it is also often an opportunity to see a particular kind of fauna, totally dependent on the ice floe: birds, seals and polar bears.
Despite its name, Texas Bar is neither in Texas nor a traditional bar. Instead, it is a fascinating and remote site in the High Arctic. The site features a former trapper’s hut once used by hunters pursuing Arctic foxes and polar bears. Still standing today, the rustic shelter retains its simple interior, complete with bunk beds and basic kitchen utensils, offering a glimpse into the harsh life of early Arctic trappers.
Situated at the entrance to Liefdefjorden, meaning the “fjord of love,” Texas Bar rests amid rolling hills covered in moss, lichen and colourful Arctic flowers. Nearby cliffs, painted in ever-changing hues and frequented by seabirds, add to the dramatic scenery.
A short hike up the surrounding slopes rewards you with magnificent views across the wilderness towards the Monaco Glacier, located farther south. It is a remarkable opportunity to experience the raw beauty and solitude of the High Arctic.
Raudfjorden means “red fjord”, a name inspired by the distinctive colour of the sandstone that forms the surrounding mountains. Stretching for approximately 20 km along Spitsbergen’s west coast, the fjord is carved with numerous shallow bays and offers spectacular views of some of the region’s most impressive ice formations.
At the head of the fjord, two branches lead to the magnificent Chauveaubreen and Raudfjordbreen glaciers, the latter spanning approximately 3 km in width. To the east, Alicehamna Beach in Bruceneset Bay has welcomed trappers, fishermen and explorers for centuries. A reminder of this rich history is the Raudfjordhytta, a rustic cabin built in 1927 by a Swedish trapper.
During your cruise, explore Ny-Ålesund, a former mining settlement that has evolved into one of the world’s northernmost scientific research communities. Founded in 1916, this remote Arctic outpost served as a departure point for several historic polar expeditions, including those led by renowned explorer Roald Amundsen.
Take time to explore the local museum and visit its iconic post office, famously regarded as one of the northernmost post offices in the world. Surrounded by dramatic Arctic landscapes, Ny-Ålesund offers a fascinating glimpse into both the region’s pioneering history and its continuing role in polar research.
