Highlights of the Spitsbergen Expedition

Indicative Itinerary: Day-by-day

Day 1: Lautoka, Viti Levu Island

Embarkation: Day 1 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm | Departure: Day 1 at 6:00 pm

Lautoka is Fiji’s second-largest city and sits on the western coast of Viti Levu, around 24 kilometres north of Nadi. Located at the centre of Fiji’s important sugar-growing region, it has earned the nickname “Sugar City.” Lautoka is also the gateway to Fiji’s beautiful Sun Coast, where sunny skies, lush mountains, sugar cane fields and charming villages create a memorable introduction to the islands.

Day 2: Beqa Island

Arrival: Day 2, early morning | Departure: Day 2, late afternoon

Located just a short distance from Viti Levu, the remote island of Beqa offers a wonderful combination of cultural traditions and marine beauty. The island is particularly famous for its ancient fire-walking tradition, known as Vilavilairevo. Visitors can witness barefoot performers crossing red-hot coals in a remarkable ceremony passed down through generations. Beneath the surface, nearby coral reefs and rich marine habitats provide superb opportunities to discover Fiji’s underwater world, including waters known for their diverse shark population.

Day 3: Suva, Viti Levu Island

Arrival: Day 3 | Departure: Day 3 late afternoon

The largest island in Fiji, Viti Levu is rich in both natural beauty and cultural heritage. Its landscapes range from dense tropical forests and dramatic mountains to extensive sugar cane plantations. In Suva, Fiji’s lively capital, visitors can explore the islands’ history at the Fiji Museum, located within the beautiful Thurston Gardens. With its combination of cultural attractions, lush scenery and nearby marine environments, Viti Levu offers many ways to experience the character of Fiji.

Day 4: Savusavu, Vanua Levu Island

Arrival: Day 4 early morning | Departure: Day 4 late afternoon

The second-largest island of Fiji, Vanua Levu remains less visited than Viti Levu, making it an appealing destination for discovering a quieter side of the country. From Savusavu, explore a landscape of tropical rainforest, lush vegetation and refreshing waterfalls. The warmth of the Fijian people adds to the experience, while traditional customs such as the kava ceremony provide an insight into local culture. Snorkellers can also explore clear waters celebrated for their remarkable visibility.

Day 5: At Sea

A day at sea provides the perfect opportunity to slow down and enjoy everything the ship has to offer. Relax in the spa, visit the fitness centre, take a dip in the pool or simply unwind in the sunshine. You can also attend onboard lectures and shows, browse the boutique or meet the PONANT photographers. From the upper deck, keep your eyes on the horizon for the chance to spot marine life passing through the open ocean.

Day 6: Vava'u Islands

Arrival: Day 5 early morning | Departure: Day 5 late afternoon

The spectacular Vava’u Islands form an archipelago of around forty coral islands scattered across the turquoise waters of the South Pacific. The main island rises towards Mount Talau, offering impressive views across the surrounding islands. Beneath the surface, coral gardens, underwater caves and abundant marine life make the region especially appealing for ocean lovers. The islands are also home to traditional crafts and local products, including pandanus weaving, Noni juice and fragrant vanilla.

Day 7: At Sea

Enjoy another peaceful day at sea as the voyage continues across the Pacific. Take time to relax in the spa, exercise, enjoy the pool or attend the onboard programme of lectures and entertainment. You can also browse the boutique, meet the PONANT photographers or simply watch the waves and keep an eye out for passing marine life from the upper deck.

Day 8: Aitutaki

Arrival: Day 8 early morning | Departure: Day 8 late afternoon

Small and peaceful, Aitutaki covers just 16 km² and retains the relaxed character of a traditional island community. Its spectacular lagoon is the highlight, with dazzling blue waters that invite exploration both above and below the surface. Snorkellers can discover the colourful marine environment, while the island is also known for its black pearls, vibrant sarongs and beautifully crafted tivaevae patchwork quilts, treasured examples of local craftsmanship.

Day 9 - 10: At Sea

Continue your Pacific crossing with another leisurely day onboard. Whether you prefer relaxing by the pool, visiting the fitness centre, enjoying a lecture or simply taking in the ocean views, this uninterrupted time at sea allows you to fully enjoy the comfort and atmosphere of the ship.

Day 11: Bora Bora, Society Islands

Famous throughout the world for its extraordinary beauty, Bora Bora is surrounded by a spectacular turquoise lagoon and framed by lush volcanic peaks. Its white-sand beaches and colourful underwater world create an idyllic tropical setting. Rising dramatically above the island, Mount Otemanu provides an impressive backdrop as you explore the landscape, discover local villages and experience the welcoming Polynesian culture.

Day 12: Motu Mahana, Taha'a Island, Society Islands

Arrival: Day 12 early morning | Departure: Day 12 late afternoon

Famous throughout the world for its extraordinary beauty, Bora Bora is surrounded by a spectacular turquoise lagoon and framed by lush volcanic peaks. Its white-sand beaches and colourful underwater world create an idyllic tropical setting. Rising dramatically above the island, Mount Otemanu provides an impressive backdrop as you explore the landscape, discover local villages and experience the welcoming Polynesian culture.

Day 13: Moorea Island

Arrival: Day 13 early morning | Departure: Day 13 late afternoon

Part of the Windward Islands, Moorea is celebrated for its dramatic mountain scenery, lush vegetation and crystal-clear lagoon. Spend time on its beautiful beaches, explore the tropical landscape or take in the panoramic views from the famous Moorea Belvedere. From this elevated viewpoint, Mount Rotui rises between the picturesque Opunohu Bay and Cook’s Bay, creating one of French Polynesia’s most memorable landscapes.

Day 14: Papeete, Tahiti Island

Arrival: Day 13 early evening | Disembarkation: Day 14 at 8:00 am

The voyage concludes in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on the north-western coast of Tahiti. The city combines a relaxed Polynesian atmosphere with a lively urban centre and offers plenty of opportunities to discover local culture. Explore historic landmarks, wander through the Vaipahi public gardens, or visit the municipal market, where stalls are filled with fresh fruit, spices, seafood and other local specialities.
