Discover the Beauty of the Marquesas, Tuamotus & Society Islands

Three Polynesian Archipelagos, One Extraordinary Journey

This French Polynesia cruise combines three very different island environments, creating an itinerary filled with contrasts.

The Society Islands offer iconic tropical scenery, from Bora Bora's famous lagoon to the lush landscapes of Huahine and Moorea. The Tuamotus reveal another side of Polynesia, where coral atolls and clear waters create exceptional opportunities to experience marine life. The Marquesas Islands are more rugged and remote, with dramatic cliffs, dense vegetation and a strong cultural heritage.

Rather than simply visiting one tropical destination, this PONANT itinerary allows you to experience the changing character of French Polynesia from island to island.

Discover Rangiroa and Fakarava

The Tuamotus are famous for their spectacular lagoons and underwater environments.

At Rangiroa, one of the world's largest atolls, turquoise waters surround a landscape renowned for its marine life and black pearl cultivation. Snorkelling and diving offer opportunities to discover colourful fish, rays and other species beneath the surface.

The voyage also visits Fakarava, a remarkable atoll recognised for its exceptional natural environment. Its clear waters and coral reefs make it a memorable destination for travellers interested in marine life and underwater exploration.

Explore the Wild Beauty of the Marquesas

A More Remote Side of French Polynesia

The Marquesas Islands provide a striking contrast to the classic lagoon scenery of the Society Islands.

Here, dramatic volcanic landscapes rise from the Pacific, with steep cliffs, dense forests and spectacular valleys creating a sense of remoteness. The islands have also inspired artists and musicians, including painter Paul Gauguin and singer-songwriter Jacques Brel.

On Nuku Hiva, discover spectacular landscapes shaped by towering cliffs and lush vegetation. On Hiva Oa and Fatu Hiva, explore places where ancient Polynesian traditions, archaeological sites and distinctive handicrafts remain an important part of the island experience.

Sail Aboard Le Paul Gauguin

A Luxury Ship Designed for French Polynesia

Your journey takes place aboard Le Paul Gauguin, a ship designed specifically for cruising the shallow turquoise waters of French Polynesia.

The ship provides a relaxed Polynesian atmosphere combined with the comfort and refinement associated with PONANT. Its intimate setting makes it an ideal base for exploring the remote islands and lagoons of the South Pacific.

After a day exploring ashore or beneath the water, return to the ship to relax, enjoy the onboard facilities and watch the scenery unfold from the decks. PONANT describes the ship as being especially designed for sailing in the region's shallow waters.

This PONANT voyage combines exploration with the comfort of an all-inclusive cruise experience.

Why Choose a Marquesas, Tuamotus & Society Islands Cruise?

This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to experience more than the classic highlights of Tahiti.

Instead of staying on one island, you can travel across three different Polynesian archipelagos, each with its own landscapes, culture and character. From the iconic lagoon of Bora Bora to the remote wilderness of the Marquesas and the underwater environments of the Tuamotus, the itinerary offers considerable variety within one 15-day voyage.

And with Le Paul Gauguin providing an intimate luxury setting throughout the journey, you can explore the islands while enjoying the comfort of returning to the same ship each day.

From the upper deck, take in the vast Pacific Ocean and keep watch for marine life along the way.

Day 4: Atuona, Hiva Oa Island

Arrival: Day 4 midday | Departure: Day 4 evening

The remote Marquesas Islands have inspired artists and travellers with their dramatic landscapes and pristine Pacific setting. On Hiva Oa, often known as the “garden of the Marquesas Islands,” rugged mountains, lush valleys and dark volcanic beaches create an unforgettable backdrop. Day 5: Omoa, Fatu Hiva Island

Arrival: Day 5 | Departure: Day 5 mid afternoon

Nestled within a spectacular bay, Omoa is a tranquil fishing village surrounded by the lush landscapes of Fatu Hiva. The dramatic setting of Taiohae Bay provides an impressive introduction to Nuku Hiva, the largest island in the Marquesas. Surrounded by rugged valleys and volcanic landscapes, the bay offers opportunities to explore the island on foot or by all-terrain vehicle. From Mount Muake, panoramic views stretch across the coastline and rocky islands beyond the bay. Discover the sacred Piki Vehine site and its traditional tikis, or visit the distinctive Notre Dame des Marquises cathedral, constructed using stone sourced from across the Marquesas Islands.

Day 8: At Sea

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Fakarava is a remarkable atoll surrounded by exceptionally clear waters. Its narrow coral rim encloses an immense lagoon filled with ever-changing shades of blue. Pristine beaches and largely untouched natural surroundings make Fakarava a haven for those drawn to the beauty of the ocean. The atoll is also recognised for its important marine ecosystems and has featured in scientific expeditions studying species such as camouflage groupers and reef sharks.

Day 10: At Sea

Enjoy a leisurely day at sea while travelling back towards the Society Islands. Spend time relaxing in the spa, enjoying the pool or taking part in onboard activities and lectures. Alternatively, simply find a comfortable spot on deck and watch the Pacific horizon as the journey continues.

Day 11: Bora Bora, Society Islands

Arrival: Day 11 early morning | Departure: Day 11 evening

Few destinations are as instantly recognisable as Bora Bora, where a spectacular turquoise lagoon surrounds a lush volcanic island. Brilliantly coloured fish inhabit the clear waters, while white-sand beaches line the shoreline. Rising above the tropical landscape, the dramatic silhouette of Mount Otemanu provides an unforgettable backdrop. Explore the island’s villages, discover its natural beauty and experience the warmth of its local communities.

Day 12: Motu Mahana, Taha'a Island, Society Islands

With soft sands and brilliant turquoise waters surrounding the island, it provides an idyllic setting for a traditional Polynesian barbecue, swimming and relaxation. The nearby island of Taha’a is known for its fertile volcanic landscape, fragrant vanilla plantations and celebrated black pearls. Its connection with vanilla production has earned it the nickname “Vanilla Island.”

Day 13: Huahine, Society Islands

Arrival: Day 13 early morning | Departure: Day 13 late afternoon

Often described as one of French Polynesia’s hidden gems, Huahine offers a quieter and more untouched island experience. Its lush vegetation, secluded coves and dramatic landscapes create an atmosphere of natural tranquillity. Explore both Grande Huahine and Petite Huahine to discover archaeological sites connected to the island’s Polynesian heritage. In the main town of Fare and the coastal villages, you can also experience the welcoming character of the local community.
